 Environmental
Projects
Cargill Fertilizer is committed to the
environment. We have a proven track record in not
only meeting all environmental regulations, but
exceeding them, thereby setting higher standards
for the phosphate industry. We have established
ourselves as a leader in environmentally
responsible and sound business practices by:
- Committing to an on-going initiative
through a set of guiding principles to
dramatically reduce our overall
environmental impact while increasing our
contribution to the world's food supply
- Spending over $125 million on
environmental improvements that have set
new industry standards since acquiring
our Tampa plant in 1985
- Being the first to build a new gypsum
stack with a protective liner beneath it
and the first to close and cap an active
gypsum stack
- Reclaiming land within two years of
ceasing mining operations
- Restoring over 3,000 acres in Florida and
turning land we own into productive
orange groves, farmland, parks, wetlands
and wildlife sanctuaries
- Leasing two islands in Tampa Bay adjacent
to our plant for $1 per year to the
National Audubon Society as a wildlife
sanctuary
- Receiving numerous Florida awards,
including the Business Leadership Award
and the Governor's Environmental
Education Award
- Continuously monitoring water and air
quality at all of our production
facilities using sophisticated
computerized safety systems
- Reducing energy consumption and
contributing to energy supplies through
co-generation
- Recycling over 90 percent of the water
our plants use - well above industry
standards
